EF5 – Tornado App

Joplin mockups Combined.png

After learning more about the 2011 tornado that demolished Joplin, I used interaction design to prototype a resource that allows users to access all tornado information in one place. This app would help the user stay more informed and safe while building a stronger sense of community.

The user can view stories from survivors of the 2011 tornado, locate tornado shelters within a 5 minute radius of them, donate to the tornado relief fund, learn about affected businesses, visit the memorials of those who passed away during the 2011 tornado, and read local news.

PROBLEM

By the time you visually confirm a tornado, it may be too late to get to safety since tornadoes can move swiftly and level structures within seconds. When you get a tornado watch alert, you should know where a shelter is within a five-minute walk from you.

SKILLS

User Testing

usability testing

Through the process of usability testing, I was able to better gauge the navigability of my design. I used the standard metric of gauging how long users typically took to complete a task and then animated these results in the video below.
